Todi is right in the center of the region of Umbria,a two-hour drive from
Florence and a 90-minute drive from Rome. The town, you may have
heard or read, was termed a few years ago “The Ideal City.” This was
a classic example of journalistic hyperbole (even the N.Y. Times featured
it) that was generated from a very straight forward study by a group of
American architects. It is definitely an extraordinary town which my wife
and I chose mostly for aesthetic considerations. We lived there for 12
years, bringing up two children, before moving to Florence, where my
work as a photographer brought us.

hills and farm land all around. It is
set on top of a hill, 480 meters
above sea level, and is primarily
medieval in its architectural make-
up. It is equidistant (20’-30 minute
drives) from Assisi, Perugia,
Spoleto, Orvieto, Montefalco,
Bevagna, Spello and Foligno, all
beautiful hill towns worth day trips.

in the 13th century and restored
by me in 1982 with the
suggestions of the American
sculptor Beverly Pepper. It is
inside the city walls, about 5
minutes’ walk from the main
square, so it is conveniently
located in terms of shopping.
Because it is flanked by the apse
of the church of S. Prassede on
the south-west side, and has a
400 sq. m. garden in front, it is
very private and quiet. All the
windows have great views of the
valley below and the Martani
mountains directly east.
